Dear Friends in ministry.
In writing this blog I am proposing to expand my own thinking on a topic that has been on my mind for a while. I do not aim to be controversial but I believe that some things need to be clear especially in the body Christ.
You might be wondering what I am alluding to. Here it is, just recently we had two prominent divorces of some of those we hold dear in Charismatic circles, dare i say even in the WOF, namely the Whites and Weeks. Both are spiritual children to the esteemed Bishop TD Jakes.
My concern stems more from the aftermath of their divorces. Traditionally in our churches and ministries when one was involved in something such as a divorce etc, there was a mandated period of "rest" that was given to that person. That was done in order for the individual to be helped and directed through this difficult time of divorce whether it was their fault or they were the victim.
In regards to our sisters and brothers (Weeks and Whites) there has been no such time allocated for their "healing" or recuperation from their divorces. Instead they have all (Bishop Weeks being the exception)gone about with ministry as if nothing wrong/major has happened. It was like they woke up the next day and nothing about them had changed. Ok I can forgive their own personal beliefs that they are well and are in no need of counselling etc.
I however have been stunned by the reaction of the Charismatic community especially TBN . Juanita Bynum was allowed to host a "Praise the Lord' programme during that very week of announcing her divorce. She was given a platform to inform the world how she will overcome this and that her ministry will shift to her focusing on abused females. She even said "I refuse to say anything bad about my husband" to applause from the crowd.
Paula White was hosted by Carman the week after announcing her divorce. He compared her to Princess Diane and went on about how Paula has suffered publicly. She went on to tell the audience about how her ministry "will not suffer as a result of this". Mind you Paula White hosted a "Satisfied Woman's Conference" the very week she announced her divorce.
I don't know much concerning the husbands besides that Bishop Randy White is taking care of WWIC. He announced that he will be more accountable to other pastors etc.. Bishop Weeks is in the biggest puddle, his court case is still pending etc. You can go to www.youtube.com to see his temporary response to everything. He will be stepping aside for a while though.
I hear that one of the reasons people don't stand aside(for a while) anymore is because their ministries and especially the offerings will suffer. I honestly don't believe that money nor influence are good enough reasons to move away from being accountable. Taking time off allows the parties to heal and come to terms with what has happened in their lives.
I feel that some of our Charismatic leaders are cutting some serious corners which puts the larger movement at risk. At risk you might say? Yes at risk because we can preach all about how good God is but if we do not uphold our integrity, our message loses a lot of its salt.
I believe that institutions such as TBN should be holding TV ministers to a higher level because of their reach. TBN might lose some money but they will still have a good name ( Proverbs 22:1)
Lastly I do think that we should be praying for these ministers and others, especially those in the limelight. I would love to hear some of your thoughts in this regard. And how can we influence the powers that be without being overly critical,or disrespectful? After-all this is about Christian witness and not popularity.
